3 Steps to Overcoming Challenges

My friend Maria is a mother of two, a wife, caring for her aging parent, and working full-time. She often feels stretched thin and worries she’s failing in all areas. At work, she’s missed a few deadlines because of family emergencies, and now she doubts her ability to handle her responsibilities. Maria wants to feel confident again and keep growing in her career without sacrificing her family.

This is the process that I gave Maria to help her meet these challenges head on and feel more confident in what she accomplishes.

Step 1: Reframe the Challenge as a Learning Opportunity

Instead of seeing obstacles as proof of failure, view them as lessons that guide growth.

  • Look at missed deadlines not as proof you are incapable, but as lessons in time management and boundary-setting.

  • You also may might ask: What caused the delay? Was it lack of planning or unexpected emergencies? This reflection helps you create backup plans for the future.

Step 2: Adjust Your Approach and Build New Habits

Use insights from past experiences to tweak your strategy and create habits that support success.

  • Instead of beating yourself up, you can say: “I learned that I need better systems, not that I’m a failure.”

  • Use past experiences to create contingency plans for future emergencies.

  • Start using a shared family calendar and delegate tasks to your spouse or older children.

  •  Instead of trying to do everything perfectly, focus on the top three priorities each day.

  • Also let your manager know about potential conflicts early and propose solutions.

Step 3: Celebrate Small Wins and Own Your Progress

Recognize and reward progress—even tiny steps—because confidence grows from acknowledging effort.

  • Acknowledge small wins—like completing a project on time despite family challenges.

  • Keep a “success journal” to remind yourself of times you overcame obstacles. This builds confidence and resilience.

By reframing setbacks as learning opportunities, you develop a growth mindset. Each adjustment and small win reinforces your belief that you can manage multiple roles successfully.
